Prof. Rao was born in April,1968 at Chibi City,Hubei Province, P.R.China. In 1989, he got his Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST). 1992, he received his Master's degree from the same university, afterwards, he was hired as a teacher at HUST. In 1999, he got Ph.D in mechanical engineering and automation during working. From October to December 2001, he joined a MIP training course at Aachen University of Technology, Germany. In 2002, he was promoted to the rank of professor. From September 2004 to September 2005, he worked as a visiting scholar at the department of engineering science of Oxford University, UK. From 2006 to 2013, he was a vice director of the State Key Lab of Digital Manufacturing Equipment & Technology at HUST. At present, he is a professor and Ph.D supervisor at School of Mechanical Science & Engineering, HUST.
Prof. Rao is a senior member of China Mechanical Engineering Society. He is a director of the Hubei Provincial Association for Artificial Intelligence. Since 2005, he has been a member of I*PROMS (Innovative Production Machines and Systems), EU. He is a reviewer of International Journal of Production Research，International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Journal of Chinese Mechanical Engineering, etc. He also is a communication expert of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
