The 2019 "Theory and Technology of Soft Robots" Seminar and "Soft Robots Innovation Design" Competition Held Successfully

From November 15th to 17th, the 5th "Theory and Technology of Soft Robots" Seminar and "Soft Robots Innovation Design" Competition was held successfully in HUST. This Seminar was hosted by the Robotics Division of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), and organized by HUST, the State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology, and Hubei Provincial Association of Artificial Intelligence.

Academician Ding Han, Director of MSE, HUST, chaired the seminar. Prof. Wu Zhigang and Huang Yong'an, and Prof. Zang Jianfeng of School of Optical and Electronic Information, HUST, were chairmen of the organizing committee of the Seminar. More than 300 teachers and students from universities abroad and home presented at the seminar, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Harbin Institute of Technology.

On the morning of November 16th, Vice President of HUST, Prof. Zhang Xinliang, declared the meeting open and addressed at the opening ceremony. On the seminar, there were 10 invited reports on the topic "Soft Robots", coving many research areas like kinetic characteristic of magnetron robots, robots exoskeleton, etc.

Besides, the organizing committee set up 3 sub-venues, 41 special reports of sub-venues, 2 "Soft Robots Innovation Design" Competitions and 25 posters.

The seminar had 1 First Prize, 2 Second Prizes, 3 Third Prizes and 4 Excellence Awards. The team from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics won the First Prize with its work "Bionic Crucian Soft Robots".

The "Soft Robots Innovation Design" Competitions were divided into two parts, namely the poster show and the soft robots competition. The poster from Peking University won the Best Poster, which was voted by attendees of the seminar. HUST won 3 Excellent Posters and Jilin University won 1 Excellent Poster.

Attendees of the Seminar carried out deep exchanges about domestic and overseas theories and applications of soft robots by these academic reports and designing competitions. The seminar provided a platform for related exchanges and communication, promoting academia's concern and explore on soft robots development, and helped with academic exchanges and cooperation among universities.
