In order to do a good job in graduate students graduation during the epidemic prevention and control period, MSE resolutely implemented arrangement of the university and strove to ensure that students graduate on time as scheduled through "cloud defense" on the premise of the safety and health of teachers and students, as well as the seriousness and effectiveness of graduation defense. MSE has made specific arrangements for the "cloud defense" of graduates, making clear the detailed process of the defense, and required that the whole process would be recorded, so as to ensure quality of the defense.
At 10:00 am on March 14, MSE held its first PhD thesis "cloud defense" with Zoom (a web conference software). Meng Leilei, a doctoral student of the State Engineering Research Center of Digital Manufacturing and Equipment, was the first one of MSE to defense online for the PhD degree. The title of his thesis was Research on Modeling and Optimization of High-efficiency and Energy-saving Flexible Job-shop Scheduling. Meng’s supervisor is Professor Zhang Chaoyong.
The defense meeting was presided over by Professor Huang Yu, Chairman of the Defense Committee. According to the standard defense process, Meng Leilei, the degree applicant, reported his PPT for about 40 minutes at first, and then read out the originality statement of the thesis. He also replied to the external audit questions as well as the questions on his research from the Defense Committee and other attendees. After the Q & A session, the applicant and onlookers withdrew from the “conference room”, and the Defense Committee had a secret ballot which unanimously agreed to "grant Meng Leilei a Doctorate Degree of Engineering". Finally, the applicant and onlookers joined in the conference again and listened to Chairman of the Defense Committee announce the defense resolution.
The “cloud defense” attracted more than 40 teachers and students to watch online, which was fair and open. The whole defense video and paper materials needed would be submitted within the specified time after school open.
As the first doctoral graduate by "cloud defense", Meng Leilei expressed his thanks to the innovation spirit of the alma mater and MSE in his defense speech, and said that he would firmly go on the academic road in the future with gratitude. Some teachers participated in the supervision of the whole process of the "cloud defense", such as Mr. Zhao Feng, Vice Dean of HUST Graduate School, Mr. Wang Yong, Director of the Degree Office of HUST Graduate School, Prof. Xu Jianfeng, Vice Dean of MSE, and Ms. Cui Bingfeng, Director of the Graduate Office of MSE.
