From August 15 to November 12, the "IROS 2020: Open Cloud Robot Table Organization Challenge" was held. The iRobotCNC Team of the State Key Lab, MSE, under the guidance of Academician Ding Han and Associate Prof. Zhao Huan, won the global championship after 3 months’ fierce competition with 59 worldwide teams. Members of the iRobotCNC Team are: MS’ 19 Students Guo Jiyang and Liu Dong, MS’ 20 Students Wang Hui and Yin Yecan, and PhD’20 Student Ge Dongsheng.

The competition was held online at the IROS 2020: International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems. It attracted 59 teams from universities including Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Princeton University, Italian Institute of Technology, Munich University of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Tsinghua University. The competition focused on the ability of service-oriented robots to organize the desktop and narrow the gap between the demand for unstructured objects organizing in human daily life and the robot's ability to identify / grasp / classify. The competition was hosted by Alibaba AI Labs.
The iRobotCNC Team innovatively proposed some algorithms, such as point cloud segmentation and clustering, desktop fitting segmentation, semantic recognition and pose estimation by feature selection of nearest neighbor distance ratio based on 3D point cloud-color combination, and task planning of initial-target mutual exclusion sorting. Having successfully completed the tasks of cloud robot remote target recognition, object grasping and sorting, the team won the championship of the competition with the prize of $10,000.
The International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems is jointly sponsored by IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), the Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ), IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), etc.. The conference, together with the ICRA Conference (IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation), are known as the largest and most influential flagship academic conference in the field of robotics in the world.
