Associate Prof. Xia Qi, Dr. Jiang Chen and Prof. Qiu Haobo attended the 12th World Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (WCSMO 12) which was held in Braunschweig, Germany from June 5 to June 9, 2017. Associate Prof. Xia delivered a special report entitled “Shape Derivative Analysis through Constrained Variational Principle and Its Application in Optimization of Thermal Actuator”, and Dr. Jiang delivered a special report entitled “An Adaptive Sampling Method Combining Local Approximation and Multi-point Strategy for Reliability-based Design Optimization”.

WCSMO is held every two years by International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO). It aims to promote the cooperation and development among researchers in the field of structural and multidisciplinary optimization (SMO). In addition, it provides top class platform for researchers to exchange new ideas, new methods and new applications.

More than 1000 people from all over the world have attended WCSMO 12 which includes more than 400 special reports whose themes are mainly topology optimization, shape optimization and multi-objective optimization based on the consideration of uncertainty, robustness, sensitivity, surrogate model, simulation, materials, and so on. The applications of these optimization methods in the area of aviation, machinery, civil engineering, and biological engineering are also introduced.

During the conference, Prof. Qiu and Associate Prof. Xia has made in-depth exchanges with international counterparts and discussed the research trend of reliability-based design optimization and topology optimization with them. What is more, WCSMO 12 has invited Prof. Daniel Tortorelli from the University of Illinuis at Urbana-Champaign, Prof. Kang Zhan from Dalian University of Technology, Prof. Yoon Young Kim from Seoul National University, who delivered plenary speeches which introduced the current research hot-spots and situations of SMO for all the participants.

This project was funded by International Cooperation Promotion Plan of MSE.
