At the invitation of Prof. Chen Rong, Assis. Prof. and Dr. Xiaowei Zeng from the  Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas at San Antonio, visited MSE on June 21, 2017. He delivered a superb lecture entitled “Computational Modeling and Simulation in Engineering Mechanics and Materials Science”.

Currently, the calculation method and the approximate theory have integrated into all aspects of the engineering research. Dr. Zeng mainly focuses on computational mechanics and materials science in the application of cell and bone mechanics and multiscale materials modeling and simulation. In the report, Dr. Zeng introduced the research methods of different scales of the material mechanical properties at first. Then he showed the application of finite element method, meshless method, molecular dynamics method in material failure, bone fracture, cell and ferroelectric materials modeling. At the same time, multi-scale atomic field theory has also been introduced to the study on the response of materials at different spatial scales. In the end, he made in-depth and enthusiastic discussion with the audience about relevant issues.

Dr. Xiaowei Zeng received B.S. and M.S. of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering from MSE, HUST, and Ph. D. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from George Washington University. He was a postdoctoral fellow of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California at Berkeley. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas at San Antonio in 2011 as an assistant professor focusing on the research of computational mechanics and materials science.
