At the invitation of Ji Qian, Lei Tian and Long Ren of the Department of Industrial Design , Professor Sooshin Choi, the provost and vice president for academic affairs of the College for Creative Studies visited MSE again on April 15, 2017.This time Professor Sooshin Choi and students from the Department of Industrial Design had a heated discussion over the question of “how to develop design research in the field of design and art", "how to cultivate creative consciousness and ability", "how to make good design sketch from the perspective of research" and other hot issues.
Research teaching arose in the 1980s, and quickly became a teaching concept and method of international mainstream science education theory, and then it was widely used in all science and engineering professional teaching. Though good results have been achieved, this method has not been carried forward in the teaching activities of arts. With the passage of time, art design, which only need inspiration, creativity, aesthetic and sensibility in the past, began to show demand for research, such as "market orientation", "user research" and" design strategy formulating ". All these design processes are based on quantitative data and strict logical analysis. Therefore, how to reduce the students' tension and rejection to research courses and turn research courses to “warm courses”, how to set up different research-oriented teaching mode, the corresponding process assessment methods, the results assessment methods and the comprehensive evaluation method for students of different majors such as information art design, exhibition art design and product design, are key problems that need to be studied and solved.
The two-year study project has reached a crucial stage. During the study, we also got a lot of useful guidance from many international education experts in the field of design. Of course Professor Sooshin Choi is one of them. Also among them are Professor Clare Brass, the senior mentor of RCA, an educator, the director of the Sustain RCA and her student Mr.DejanMitrovic, the mentor of RCA and the founder and creative director of Kidesign who visited HUST last month for exchange and collaboration.
As a link of the research-based teaching exploration for students of design, this visit and speech was supported by the International Cooperation Promotion Project of MSE.
