At the invitation of Associate Prof. Jiang Ping of the State Key Lab of Digital Manufacturing Equipment &Technology, Wang Yan, associate professor of Georgia Institute of Technology, visited MSE on the morning of May 18, 2017. He delivered an academic report named “Multiscale Simulation of Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Processes” at Room B604 of the Advanced Manufacturing Building .

In the report, he outlined the status and significance of the numerical simulation of additive manufacturing and analyzed the current challenges in this respect. And then he presented the study of the physical and chemical mechanism of the laser melting process based on micro-scale, and the necessity of establishing the relationship among process-structure-property. After that, he showed the models of multi-physics field based on the phase field method in combination with certain mechanisms such as heat transfer, fluid dynamics, phase transition kinetic energy and dendrite growth, which revealed the laser melting effect on the morphology and properties of the particles and can predict the mechanical properties of melt particles.

In the end, Professor Wang Yan looked into the foreground of numerical simulation of additive manufacturing. After the report, he made an in-depth communication with present students and teachers.
