Prof. Mo Li from Georgia Institute of Technology visited school of Mechanical Engineering at the invitation of Prof. Guanglan Liao of National Engineering Research Center of Manufacturing Equipment Digitization. He gave a lecture titled “Harden and toughening metallic glasses” in Advanced Manufacturing Building room A416 on June 21st, 2016 3 pm.

In the lecture, Prof. Li reviewed the remarkable mechanical properties in metallic glass compared to its crystalline counterparts. Due to very limited improvement got in various experimentally attempts, a new constitutive model was used which helped introduce statistical heterogeneity into the metallic glass samples, i.e. free volume variation or dispersion. It was found that with the increase of the statistical heterogeneity, the plasticity and toughness can be enhanced systematically and in certain circumstances, even work hardening can be achieved. The underlying mechanisms and possible design of new metallic glass composites using the concept of heterogeneity dispersion was also discussed.

It is also known that he then participated in doctoral thesis defense of two students in Prof. Tielin Shi's research group, and discussed research hotspot and technical detail with other participants, which opened up their horizons and broadened thinking.

This activity was supported by the International Corporation Promotion Plan of School of Mechanical and Engineering.
