Dr. Xinyu Li, from School of Mechanical Science & Engineering (MSE) of HUST, and PhD students Jin Yi and Jie Gao attended the 2016 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM 2016) from Jan 24 to Jan 26, which was held in Auckland University, New Zealand. They also gave the presentations namely “Variable Fidelity Surrogate Assisted Harmony Search Algorithm for Expensive Engineering Design Optimization”, “Design a metal extrusion device for fused deposition modeling technology” and “Topological shape optimization design of continuum structures via an effective level set method”.

International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM) is the premium conference in design, manufacturing, and innovation. It was created in 2011 by merging two leading conferences: ICMA and ISDM. The series of International Conferences on Manufacturing Automation (ICMA) have a long history starting from 1992 at The University of Hong Kong. The purpose of this conference aims at providing a forum for exchange of ideas between researchers in the areas of engineering automation with a view to fostering a better link between industry and academia. International Symposium on Digital Manufacturing (ISDM) was established by Wuhan University of Technology in 2006. “Industry Forum on Additive Manufacturing – what are the high-value opportunities for companies in New Zealand” was also held at the conference. This conference attracted over 120 specialists from 20 countries and during the three days meeting, they shared their research results and discuss the current research trend in the field of innovative design and manufacturing. ICIDM 2016 also invited four famous specialists to give the keynote speeches. They are Prof. Monica Bordegoni from School of Design at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, Prof. Han Ding from School of Mechanical Science and Engineering, HUST, China, Prof. John P.T. Mo, from Manufacturing Engineering at RMIT University, Australia and Prof. Jen-Yuan (James) Chang, from Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at the National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Their wonderful speeches left deep impressions on the participants.

The visit was supported by the international cooperation promoting program funds.
