On September 26th afternoon, because of accepted the invitation of industrial design department, Prof. Volker Albus and lady Xie Kaijing held a lecture at room B103 of east 9 building , the theme is "Not only a functional - Contemporary product design" , and after the lecture, they discuss with teachers and students about the impact of design factors.
Volker Albus was born in 1949, he studied Architecture at the RWTH Aachen from 1968 to 1976. Volker Albus started designing furniture and exhibitions in 1984, alongside which he also worked as a publicist. Until 2001, he wrote essays for “Design Report” and since 2003 he has been writing his own regular column in the magazine, “form”. He has also written and edited numerous books. Since 1994 Volker Albus has been a Professor of Product Design at the state Academy of Design in Karlsruhe. He lives and works in Frankfurt/Main and Karlsruhe.Volker Albus is one of the key protagonists of New German Design and acts as its intellectual mouthpiece. Since 1982, he took part in exhibition design, and quickly come into the public eye. In 1986, he cooperate with Dusseldorf art museum, hold a new design exhibition "emotional collage - senses to live", won the attention of international design. Albus design including Frankfurt gallery of interior design and regensburg and tucker sith the cafe of the castle, and it is these works led Germany's new design claim on the great hall.In 2000,Albus earn the European design award with his work "small spotlight", in 2002, this work won German baden-wurttemberg international design awards again.
As upstream of functionalism, Germany has launched an revolution of independent design in the 1980s , all of those designer abandoned the mainstream rules of industrial design .Volker Albus demonstrates many groups of tension relationship between tradition and innovation in design work in the lecture, and discuss about the problem of material, structure, modelling, manufacturing, behavior, culture, intuitively describe the diversity of the design and reality. The products show a new and fresh feeling to the audience, and also brings a feeling of the interaction loose and free. Prof. Volker Albus questions the concept of "new" and "old" through multiple sets of design works, discussing the meaning of "split" and "restructuring", showing the "recycling" and the principle of "design", and how to transform, classic design of new materials for traditional processing methods.

Through the lecture of Prof. Volker Albus, we recognize that in the west, industry design not only attract more and more attention: successful design vocabulary have been copied and changes, at the same time, although many design so called "new", but its prototype came from history of the old form, with a particular country and culture unique stamp, so the design of the "new" actually can be regarded as the reinterpretation of traditional design principles.This approach will also promote the discussion of relative topics and will also promote in different country and culture communication about contemporary design concept and design works.
After the lecture, Prof. Volker Albuspresented his curator to industrial design department, and visited the new building of Mechanical Science and Engineering college, he expressed the hope that can further exchanges and cooperation with industrial design department of our school.
