On Dec.15th, 2017, Prof. Huang Xiaodong from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, visited MSE at the invitation of Associate Prof. Xia Liang of the Department of Mechatronic Engineering, MSE, and gave a report entitled “Evolutionary Topology Optimization and Its Multidisciplinary Applications”.

Prof. Huang began by introducing the background and development of Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO). He recounted how he improved the method and proposed Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO), a widely applied method at present. He also shared his experience of writing papers, which resonated strongly with participating teachers and students. Afterwards, he introduced the latest research progress made by his research team in multidisciplinary fields in recent years, including innovative designs of photonic/phononic crystals and elastomer/acoustic metamaterial structure.

After the report, Prof. Huang exchanged thoughts and ideas with all participants. Prof. Xuan Jianping, Associate Prof. Xia Qi, and Associate Prof. Jiang Hao from the Department of Mechatronic Engineering attended the presentation. Lecturer Xiao Mi from the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing System Engineering and Li Li from the Department of Mechanical Design and Vehicle Engineering were also among them.

On Dec. 16th, Prof. Huang was invited to attend a seminar on the latest research progress and application of topology optimization design organized by Prof. Shi Tielin and Prof. Gao Liang of State Engineering Research Center of Digital Manufacturing and Equipment, and the inauguration ceremony of the “Topology Optimization Research Center” of MSE.
