Assistant Professor Zhu Jian from National University of Singapore Visits MSE

On April 9, Dr. Zhu Jian, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), visited the School of Mechanical Science & Engineering (MSE) at the invitation of Prof. Wu Zhigang from the State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology. During his visit, Dr. Zhu gave a presentation entitled “Soft Robots”.

In the presentation, Dr Zhu introduced the features of soft drive and soft robots, and the research methods and achievements made by his research team, including jellyfish robots, frog robots, caterpillar robots, origami robots, and artificial muscles of simulating facial expressions. He then discussed the application prospect and challenges of soft robots with all the participants.

Dr. Zhu also shared his research experience and ideas with them. His presentation was both innovative and enlightening. The participants expressed that they benefited a lot from his presentation.

 

A Brief Introduction of Dr. Zhu

Dr. Zhu is an assistant professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS). Prior to joining the NUS, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, under the supervision of Prof. Suo Zhigang. He received a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Canada in 2008 and was then awarded a NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada in 2008. His research interests are Soft Robots, Soft Active Materials, and Smart Materials and Structures.
