On June 7, 2018, invited by MSE Prof. Hu Youmin, Dr. Shi Jianjun, member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), member of International Academy for Quality (IAQ), Carolyn J. Stewart Chair and Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology visited MSE and made a report entitled “Data Fusion for Quality Improvement in Smart Manufacturing System”.

Prof. Shi Tielin of the Department of Mechatronic Engineering, MSE chaired the meeting.  Prof. Shi introduced that his team focuses on data fusion for quality improvement in smart manufacturing system. The report he delivered during the meeting is highly innovative and is at the forefront of the times. He presented the use of data fusion technology in solving problems plaguing famous international companies, such as the position and installation of components and parts on certain type of Boeing aircrafts, and the state monitoring of the internal sensing network of Samsung mobile cavity. Professor Shi Jianjun gave a thorough explanation to each model, analyzed the coupling relationship of the parameters in the model, found the parameters that have key impact on the results, optimized it and obtained the optimal solution.

The report embodies the high professional attainments of the professor. Moreover, combining the model with practical application, Prof. Shi made it easier for participants to understand the significance of data fusion and the related research.

After the report, experts and scholars had a further discussion with the professor. Many scholars had a deeper understanding of the application of data fusion in the smart manufacturing. Besides, they discussed the project with Boeing Company prospectively, and how to apply data fusion to the stress analysis after installation, and obtain the most suitable installation.

The visit of the professor, sponsored by MSE fund of international exchange, has facilitated the academic exchanges and communication between the two schools.
