On November 18, 2024, the Sub-forum on Intelligent Manufacturing of 2024 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application was successfully held at the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MSE) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST).
The sub-forum invited 10 academic and industry experts from countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong, China. With the theme of "Exploring High-Level Pathways of the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application in Intelligent Manufacturing", they engaged in discussions with 10 experts and scholars from HUST-MSE on how to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in science, technology, innovation, and talent cultivation. The objective was to achieve a deep integration of universities and enterprises in intelligent manufacturing engineering education, academic research, and industrial development, accelerate the international cooperation and integration of industry, education, research and application in intelligent manufacturing, and jointly promote sustainable development and innovation in the field.
The sub-forum was divided into two parts: Seminar on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application and Academic Symposium on Intelligent Manufacturing, conducted both online and offline. Jing Jiang, Deputy Director of HUST Office of International Affairs, attended the event.
During the seminar, Fen Zhang, Chairman of HUST-MSE, delivered a welcome speech, warmly welcoming all experts and scholars, reviewing the fruitful outcomes of the previous year's conference, and expressing her best wishes for this year's event. Jianfeng Xu, Vice Dean of HUST-MSE, presided over the seminar and introduced HUST-MSE, the composition of participants, and the discussion topics. Rong Chen, Vice Dean of HUST-MSE, made a representative speech, stating that HUST-MSE has continued to make breakthroughs in international cooperation and talent cultivation, and will further promote greater achievements in the international cooperation and integration of industry, education, research and application.
Following the opening remarks, experts engaged in heated discussions on topics including the "Dual Mentor" program for innovative talent joint cultivation, scientific research innovation, and international cooperation and integration of industry, education, research and application.
Regarding "International Talent Cultivation," experts including Weiming Shen, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering from HUST-MSE, Kui Liu, Principle Scientist of Singapore Manufacturing Technology Institute, Kai Tang, Professor of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Wenhan Zeng, Principal Researcher of National Centre for Advanced Metrology at University of Huddersfield, Enrico Zio, Professor at Politecnico di Milano and MINES ParisTech, Jianzhong Yang, Xiangrui Zeng, Yuan Gao and Junfeng Xiao, professors and researchers from HUST-MSE, shared their extensive experiences in student guidance and cultivation. They provided in-depth analyses of the unique models and academic exchanges in international talent cultivation at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Singapore, and Hong Kong, China.
On the topic of "International Cooperation and Integration Models of Industry, Education, Research and Application," experts such as Yiyu Cai, Professor and Senate Member of Nanyang Technological University, Shih-Chi Chen, Professor of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Jean-Jacques Delaunay, Associate Professor of University of Tokyo, Zhiyu Wang, Assistant Professor of University of Tokyo, Wei Guo and Jinlong Zhu, researchers from HUST-MSE, shared their personal experiences in practical scientific research. They presented valuable insights into scientific research innovation and cooperation and integration of industry, education, research and application at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong, China.
At the symposium, Jing Jiang, Deputy Director of HUST Office of International Affairs, delivered a speech. She noted that HUST has been committed to promoting international cooperation and exchanges in the field of intelligent manufacturing. Through this sub-forum, HUST aims to build a platform for deep integration of industry, education, research and application, thereby fostering closer cooperation between academia and industry. Subsequently, experts presented in-depth sharing on various industry-education-research-application fields, including intelligent manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, and composite materials. The symposium was hosted by Yuan Gao, Researcher from HUST-MSE.
Lenan Zhang, Assistant Professor of Cornell University, presented a report titled "Understanding Heat Transport at Interfaces for Thermal Management of 2D Electronics." The report introduced the latest advancements in thermal management for two-dimensional electronics, focusing on the measurement of thermal expansion coefficients of two-dimensional materials, heat transport mechanisms at two-dimensional interfaces, and novel cooling technologies based on two-dimensional thermal interfaces.
Kui Liu, Principle Scientist of Singapore Manufacturing Technology Institute, delivered a report titled "Ultra-precision Machining for Optical Applications in SIMTech." The report discussed the latest developments in ultra-precision machining (UPM) for optical applications, emphasizing the use of new technologies such as in-situ multi-axis freeform surface machining to manufacture complex discontinuous microstructures on monolithic components, thereby improving production efficiency and dimensional accuracy.
Kai Tang, Professor of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, presented a report titled "Research in Metal DED Hybrid Manufacturing." The report introduced research on metal direct energy deposition (DED) hybrid manufacturing, focusing on the fabrication of complex metal parts and optimization of surface quality through alternating additive and subtractive operations.
Philippe H. Geubelle, Professor and Associate Dean of College of Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, presented a report titled "Optimization of a Frontal-polymerization-based Manufacturing Process for Thermoset Composites." The report introduced research on the optimization of a frontal-polymerization-based manufacturing process for thermoset composites, emphasizing the analysis of the manufacturing process of continuous carbon fiber-reinforced dicyclopentadiene resin through reaction-diffusion models.
Initiated by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China in 2018, the International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application has been held for six consecutive years, receiving widespread welcome from universities, enterprises, and research institutes both domestically and internationally. In 2023, HUST-MSE successfully hosted the Sub-forum on Mechanical Engineering of 2023 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application.
The Sub-forum on Intelligent Manufacturing of 2024 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application is of great significance. It serves not only as a platform for academic exchanges and technological innovation in the field of intelligent manufacturing but also as a crucial opportunity to promote deep integration of industry, education, research and application, as well as to facilitate the transformation, upgrading, and intelligent development of the manufacturing industry.
